INFORMATION FOR ATHLETES AND COACHES

  • The Academy has two equal Aims: 1] o work with athletes to develop their hurdling techniques, 2] To offer hands on opportunities for coaches to work with athletes and other coaches
  • The academy has been working with young hurdlers , u15, u17, u20 sprint and long hurdles for 15 years , indoors at Northwood Stadium Stoke
  • It meets monthly from November to March
  • The Academy welcomes applications from hurdlers who are at a reasonable level of competance for their club
  • The Academy can benefit all levels of coach development from the beginner to experienced. All coaches are welcome

HOW THE ACADEMY WORKS

  • The Academy is under the overall direction of the Coordinator and Chief Coach. (Currently Ted Grey)
  • Each age group and gender has a small team of coaches working under a team leader
  • By working with groups of athletes, coach development is active and hands on.
  • It is an ideal platform for sharing idea and learning from others. The emphasis is on the technical development of hurdlers but other aspects eg strength and conditioning will also figure
  • Coaches will be encouraged to input their ideas and extend their experience by planning sessions or parts of sessions
  • The team coaching system enables athletes to get more individual attention as needed and every coach will have a part in this process under the guidance of the team leader
  • The Academy has developed a guide sheet for coaches detailing the aspects of hurdling covered in the sessions but these are flexible
  • Groups are often subdivided for particular purposes eg at the first session there will be some athletes moving into the next age group with different hurdles specifications as well as those in their second year.
  • Coaches will experience the progressive nature needed by hurdlers through the winter, from basic or new work in Autumn through to indoor competition preparation in winter and the outdoor season in Spring
  • Athletes who attend have varied levels of competence and experience. The Academy is not just for the best but welcomes any hurdler with a reasonable club standard of achievement.
  • However the Academy is proud of its record in producing some of the finest , national winning, hurdlers over the 15 years of its existence
