2003 British Universities Championships Report

Dominic Girdler and Helen Worsey set new personal bests, and Championship records as well as achieving the UKA A standard qualification standard for the European u23 Championships to be held later this summer in Poland.

Girdler the AAA 2003 Indoor Champion clocked 13.89 an improvement of 6/100ths on his 2002 best to take the Universities title infront of Allan Scott and Tristan |Anthony who clocked useful season openers of 14.15 and 14.24 respectively. The former European u20 bronze medalist was also just under the 13.90 UKA A standard.

Fellow Loughborough University Hurdler Helen Wory had an equally profitable outing, improving Diane Hawkins Championship best by a full tenth with 13.45 as she beat training partner Tamsin Stephens into second place [13.76]. In third was Stafforshire's Wendy Davidson who came very close to breaking the 14 second barrier as she improved to 14.01.

The most impressive one lap hurdles display of the championships came from 2002 AAA u20 Champion Sian Scott who took over a second off her best to clock 59.08 for her first ever sub 60 second clocking and a European u20 qualification mark. In so doing Scott pushed Nicola Sanders close, but the 1999 u20 European bronze medalist continued her strong start to the 2003 season with a 58.99 victory. In a close finish Hannah Wood also showed good early form with a 59.14 season opener.

In the men's event Jeff Christie recorded a comfortable 52.39 victory in front of Oxford University's Chris Sleeman [52.86], with Andy Clements setting a new pb of 53.87 for the bronze medal infront of Loughborough duo Ben Caldwell and Gareth Rees.
