Newton Delivers Paris Trip

Rob Newton finally delivere the performance he has theatened in the last few weeks with two stunning pb's in the space of little more than an hour. Having qualifed fastest in the AAA final and been quickest in the first round of the European u23 championships, before being disqualified and finishing fifth in these respective championships, the Mansfield athlete took almost 2/10th of a second off his pb to move to fourth on the Uk all time list with a 13.36 final victory following a 13.42 heat clocking.

Newton was the undoubted star of the show as Loughborough staged its and Britain's first ever European Athletics Promotion meeting. The Ted Gey and Lloyd Cowan athlete attained the A standard for the Paris World Championships with both his runs and comprehensively defeated a field including 13.35 American performer Todd Matthews and Irish record holder Peter Coghlan, whose 13.76 none the less was a big seasonal best. Mohammed Silah Freckleton's ran 13.79 in the heats and then 13.80 for 4th place, both performances better than his pervious best.

To put in context the quality of Newton's performance, the time ranks him equal 14th in the world in 2003 and ranks him in British terms infront of Olympic finalist Hugh Teape, Commonwealth Games medalist Dave Nelson and World Indoor Medalist Nigel Walker.

On a good day for sprint hurdling there were also pbs for Kris Jones 14.22 and Midlands Champion Nick Gayle 14.87 in the men's event, whilst Julie Pratt twice clocked 13.39 her season's best , as Sarah Claxton just held off American Christine Ohaeri and Belgian Myrian Tschomba to win the final. Hannah Elwiss' 14.07 was also new best time.

The wind that assisted the sprint hurdlers was not so helpful for the one lap hurdlers ealier in the day. That did not stop there being an excellent battle between Anthony Boruamato and Matt Douglas, with the Sale Harrier reversing the result from the AAA's four days before [when they both medalled behind Chris Rawlinson] to triumph in 50.04 as both Brits dominated a field comprised of sub 50 second runners.

The women's race was aslo a strongly fought battle, with Liz Fairs leading off the bend before being caught by New Zealand record holder, Rebecca Wardell who triumphed in the run in with 57.39 as the first three athletes went below 58 seconds, with Katie Jones anmd Tracey Duncan also below 59 in a high quality a race.

For Fairs a sub 57 clocking would seem a strong possibility if she can get the right races and she is clearly establishing herself as Britian's number two in 2003, behind Natasha Danvers.
