Indoor Territorial Championship Report
The 2003 60m Hurdles
season continued last weekend with the territorial championships
with sub eight second performances in the Midlands,
Southern and Scottish senior men's championships.
At Birmingham Rob Newton turned the tables on Dominic
Girdler after their previous clash in Manchester, triumphing
7.93 to 7.97, whilst in the Junior men's race, multi
talented Edward Dunford set a new best of the 3'3"
barriers with an impressive 8.06 clocking. Also of note
in Birmingham was Nicola Robinson, last years top Intermediate
sprint hurdler, whose 8.80 victory showed early promise
for the junior event.
In Glasgow Allan Scott equalled Girdler's UK best time
of the year with a 7.92 triumph in the Scottish Combined
East and West District Championships. Second behind
Scott was former Scottish 110H record holder Ken Campbell
with a promising 8.20 as he started his comeback after
several years away from the event.
Also in the Scottish Distict championships, Alyssa Fullelove
set a championship best [West] of 7.59 in the heat before
taking the final in 7.62, whilst in the u17 Men there
was also a championship best for Perth's Stuart Rowan
with a 8.40 triumph.
The Southern Championships were held at Bedford. Newham's
Duncan Malins took the title after a 7.95 heat clocking
in front of Richard Allyene who showed excellent early
season form reducing his personal best to 8.06 in the
heats. In the junior women's event Symone Belle went
to the top of the u20 year list with an impressive 8.62
victory, whilst last year's English Schools Junior Girls
Champion Kylie Robilliard showed good adjustment to
the u17 specifications with a 8.80 victory. Joe Tenny
took the equivalent youths title in front of Edward
Harrison with 8.4 [not the first time the electronic
timing has failed at Bedford!!!].
The male Age Group Northern Territorial Hurdles races
at Manchester were also blighted by some timing problems,
but in the women's races last years top junior woman
Gemma Fergusson clocked 8.64 for a new personal best,
whilst in the u17 race Vicky Garrad dipped below the
nine second barrier with 8.98 for a good victory.
