In Addition to gain automatic selection at the World Championship Trials, athletes must achieve the following UKA Standard in the 2003 season:

1. The team will be selected in two waves – on Monday 28th July following the Norwich Union World Championship Trials and finalised on Monday, 11th August.

2. The first two Great Britain and Northern Ireland eligible athletes in each trial event (except marathon, walks, long endurance and combined events) will be awarded a place in the World Championship Team, provided they have:(a) achieved the IAAF ‘A’ standard in the field events during the 2003 season, and(b) in the track events have achieved the UKA standard during the 2003 season:

3. If an athlete qualifies for more than one individual event the selectors, after discussions with the athlete and coach, have the right to either endorse the selection or select the athlete in one event.

4. The UK Athletics qualifying period in which the IAAF ‘A’ & ’B’ standards [appendix A] should be achieved is from 1st January 2003. In only exceptional circumstances will 2002 qualifying marks be accepted.

5. Current form will be an important part of the selection criteria.

6. Athletes must compete in the Trials in the event for which they wish to be considered for selection (except marathon, 5k, 10k, walks and combined events).

7. At the first selection meeting (28.7.03) automatic selections will be confirmed and additional places selected upon merit. It is envisaged that the majority of the team will be selected at the first selection meeting.

8. Any remaining vacant places can be filled up to 11th August providing that: (a) the relevant ‘A’ standard has been achieved or (b) in events where no athlete has been selected with the ‘A’ standard, athletes with the IAAF ‘B’ standard may be added to the team.NB: Only one athlete with a ‘B’ standard can be selected in each event – in order to select two or more athletes for an event all athletes must have the ‘A’ standard.

9. The Selection Panel reserves the right to make value judgements on situations which they consider to be exceptional circumstances within the reference framework and the spirit of the general policy.
