  1. The Team will be selected in two waves - on Monday 12th July following the Olympic Trials, and finalised on Monday 19th July.
  2. The first two Great Britain & Northern Ireland eligible athletes in each trial event [except marathon, walks, long endurance and combined events] will be awarded a place in the Olympic Games Team porvided they have : [a] achieved the IOC/IAAF 'A' standard during the 2004 season. [b] in the men's sprint events, have achieved the specified UKA standards
  3. If an athlete qualifies for more than one individual event the selectors, after discussion with the athlete and coach, have the right to either endorse the selection or select the athlete in one event.
  4. The UK Athletics qualifying period in which the IOC/IAAF A & B standards should be achieved is from 1st January 2004. 2003 Qualifying marks will only be accepted [with BOA permission] where it can be justified that there wasa valid reason for not recording the standard in 2004.
  5. Current form will be an important part of the selection criteria as are performances at the Olympic Trials [10/11th July]
  6. Athletes must compete in the Trials in the event for which they wish to be considered for selection [except marathon, walks, long endurance and combined events]
  7. At the selection meeting [12th July] automatic selections will be confirmed. Any remaining vacant positions can be filled providing that: [a] the relevant 'A' standard has been achieved, or [b] in the events where no athlete has been selected with the 'A' standard, athletes with the IOC/IAAF 'B' standard may be added to the team. UKA will have to make a special case to the BOA for an athlete who achieves the IOA/IAAF 'B' standard. N.B. Only one athlete with the 'B' standard can be selected in each event, - in order to select two or more athletes for an event all athletes must have the 'A' standard.
  8. After the initial selection any remaining vacant places can be filled upto 19th July
  9. A special case can be made by UKA to the BOA for an individually named athlete who, in exceptional circumstances, has failed to achieve the Olympic Qualifying Standard by 19th July to have a further extension up until the IAAF deadline of 9th August 2004. The BOA will judge each case on its merits and must be based on a potential medal winning performanceand substantial mitagating circumsatnces concerning their failure to achieve the OQS in the agreed timeframe.
  10. The selection panel reserves the right to make value judgements on situations which it considers to be exceptional circumstances within the reference framework and the spirit of the general policy.
